Dyslexic Moments…

Working with dyslexic students day in and day out, we experience many dyslexic moments. As a result, we have adopted the philosophy that better embrace and laugh at the dyslexic moments, or they will make you cry. Please feel free to share your dyslexic moments.

  1. Everyday when I pick the kids up from school, I ask them “What’s the best part of your day? What’s the worst part of your day?”

Well, this particular day, I was distracted and didn’t get to ask the kids “best part/worst part” until we were sitting around the dinner table. Kate quickly volunteered her worst part. “Mom, the worst part of my day was when Sarah and I had lunch together today.” I said, “Really? Why?” She quickly explained to me that Sarah had been walking around all day with her hand on her forehead. I asked if Sarah had a headache. Kate said no. I asked if she had gotten hit in the head. She said no. I continued to offer a few more suggestions….each time Kate said no.

Finally, I told Kate, “I have no idea why in the world she would do such a thing.” Kate told me, “Well, Sarah did it because she didn’t want anyone to 8V her.” There was a long pause as the rest of us at the table all sat there looking at Kate trying to figure out what she had just said.

I got it….I asked Kate, “You mean like ‘I could have had a V-8?’ ”

Kate quickly responded, “Yeah…that’s it!” The rest of the family quickly burst into laughter as they started to understand that once again Kate got the words out of order. Additionally, who knew that “8-V” was a verb?

  2. The outside covering of a tree is often known as it’s bark…..to Kate…it’s the tree’s skin. :) Just more of that language processing!

  3. Ever put your words out of order…or just mix up the sounds in the word? Most dyslexics have. This weekend was “sindowwill” instead of “windowsill”.

  4. check it out!
